Freedom From Smoking

Freedom From Smoking, an eight-week smoking cessation program, is
periodically offered to residents in Clinton Township and in Mount
Clemens through the Community Health Outreach Program.

The Macomb County NicotineNarcs are a group of more than 100 teens
from across Macomb County who have taken up the fight against BIG
Tobacco. They have held rallies at Freedom Hill on World No
Tobacco Day and the AMC Forum 30 on the eve of the Great American
Smokeout to demonstrate how many people die each year from tobacco
related illness and to address the issue of placement smoking
in movies. Their fight will continue next year with a grant from
Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Michigan in local communities and school
districts to help eliminate underage smoking.

Youth
Tobacco Act
The Macomb County Tobacco Prevention Coalition concentrates one
of its objectives on decreasing tobacco sales to underage youth.
This retailers education project, called Tobacco-Teens-And
You A Merchants Packet on the Youth Tobacco Act
is an educational initiative for retailers to check I.D. of young
people in order to reduce the sales of tobacco to minors and to
say Thanks for Asking to the many retailers who follow
the law. The next project will be held in the Fall of 2003 with
the Utica Community Schools.
Talking Tobacco

A one-hour power point presentation is available for all 5th grade
classes in Macomb County elementary schools. This presentation covers
the addictive power of nicotine, the 4,700 chemical compunds in
cigarette smoke and the diseases and death that are a consequence
of using tobacco, and the clout of cigarette companies through advertising.
It offers children the power to make a healthy choice to not smoke.

Teens Against Tobacco Use is a program designed by the American
Lung Association and sponsored by the Macomb County Health Department.
High School Students, with the help of our health educators, are
empowered with the knowledge and skills it takes to teach elementary
and middle school students of the dangers of tobacco use.
Tobacco Cessation Information Community Outreach

The Macomb County Tobacco Prevention Coalition will provide a display
board, which highlights the negative health consequences of tobacco
use and the serious health effects of secondhand smoke, to school
and community health fairs. Counseling prospective quitters and
providing a Quit Kit with follow-up contact is also
a service. The Smoke-free Home campaign, developed by
the American Lung Association, is also marketed and information
to participate is provided.

smoke. Encourages sharing tobacco information with family members.
Promotes lifelong commitment never to smoke by signing a no-smoking
pledge.

School-based interactive video and tobacco prevention presentation
for grades six through eight. Graphically demonstrates the deadly
effects of cigarettes and spit tobacco. Reveals how smoking speeds
the aging process. Dramatically portrays the consequences of behavioral
choices today on personal health tomorrow.
